Four Guitarists. One Shared Tradition.

One of the most influential classical guitarists of the 20th century, Pepe Romero, has spent a lifetime shaping the future of the instrument—not only through his performances, but through his students.

On April 18th, the Leyenda Foundation presents a special evening of classical guitar featuring four exceptional young artists, all students of Pepe Romero himself. This rising quartet has been personally sanctioned by Romero and carries forward the tradition of The Romeros, following in the footsteps of legendary ensembles like the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet.

Each guitarist brings their own unique voice, and throughout the evening they will perform solo works, duets, and full quartet pieces, showcasing the depth, intimacy, and power of the classical guitar.

This is more than a concert, it’s a glimpse into the next generation of great classical guitarists.

Meet the Artists

Damian Goggans (Cleveland, OH): A performer and scholar committed to broadening the classical guitar repertoire, Damian has premiered original works at Severance Hall and toured with the U.S. Guitar Orchestra. His playing is thoughtful, precise, and deeply intentional.

Kenneth Bender (Encinitas, CA): A San Diego native with nearly two decades of dedicated practice, Kenneth brings warmth and technical depth to everything he plays — from solo works to chamber settings.

Austin Keller (Pocatello, ID): An award-winning guitarist and pianist who experiences music as color, Austin's playing has an expressive originality that has earned him top prizes in competitions across the country.

Benji Scheckner (Encinitas, CA): A current student of Maestro Pepe Romero, Benji has performed as a concerto soloist, as a soloist, and in numerous ensemble settings, including at the Granada Guitar Festival. At 15, he plays with a depth and sensitivity that goes well beyond his years.

A Message from the Maestro Himself:

"It brings me great joy to witness the birth of a new guitar quartet, The Leyenda Quartet, which is comprised of Benji Scheckner, Kenneth Bender, Austin Keller, and Damian Goggans. The debut will take place on April 18th in San Diego.

Please join me to experience this exciting event!"
